Has any one used the Otis cleaning system. I thought be great to have while hunting. Would fit in ones back pack. I see the Otis on a few hunting shows. Be great if you need to clean rifle while out hunting. Least that’s what shown on the hunting shows

i used the otis system for the past year and half.
i like it , its a great concept. it is a little bit to get used to , im used to the traditional rod .
it is good to have the gun in a gun vice or stable , and as usual always pull away from the breech and out the barrel.

IMPORTANT TIP:
make sure to fold he patch exactly as they show you to do it or you will get stuck good in the barrel or it may just come off.. EXACTLY as they tell you to fold it..

i actually had a problem with mine, the cables are coated in a clear plastic or rubber like material where you can see thru the coating and actually see the braided steel cable. my problem was that about 6 inches of the steel braided cable wore thru the outside rubber/plastic case and is totally exposed.  am concerned that when i use it , it will rub against the inside of the barrel and mar or scratch it up .
i tried emailing the company but had no response..

I jammed the cleaning patch in my Ruger 77 mk2 308. I called Otis was very helpful. I went to my gunsmith he put cable on his wor5k bench vise and walked backwards. Then came right out. Here is the number 1 800-684 7486

Same thing happened to me Ray.

I have a 24 inch bbl on my AR-15.

stuck about 6 inches into the barrel from the breech..

I didnt fold it correctly, stuck the cable thru , attached the t-handle pin and began to twist and pull and bam , what do you know

It was stuck so hard in there , I was able to unscrew the cable and screw on a old rod I had from one of my old cleaning kits and push it back.
Very risky. I though about it afterwards. If i would not been able to screw that rod on that patch loop , I would be screwed.. ( hahaha ).

Next time, if that ever happens, I go straight to the gun smith, but for now, I think im going to stick with the rods.
I will give them a call and try to get the frayed cable replaced or a refund.

I’m sending the Otis kit back to Cabela. I will use the cleaning rod and Shooters Choice cleaning oils. I never had a problem using the rod and I like how Shooters Choice does on my guns. Lesson learn if it works why try to change

Mark,

Glad you got that response from them.  I know some folks have talked about being a little dissatisfied with them but they are one of our corporate partners and we talk to them pretty frequently.  I will tell you this…these people are professionals and they are very proud of the product they make and the quality in which they make it.  They are also COMMITTED to customer service and to making all of the products in the US - period.  I hope some folks who have had a bad experience get a chance to test the system once again.  I can tell you that I don’t go out into the field without taking one of their hunter series mini-kits and it has served me pretty well over the years.

glad they are corporate partners.

Mark,

Great to hear that you gave them a chance to make good on this.  I mentioned their pride in customer service and it looks like they lived-up to their reputation.  Thanks for letting us know how this all worked out.

In my honest opinion, any US company worth their salt would darn near fist fight someone right now to keep a client. If you have a problem with an american company, call them on it! They will make things right! Well done Mark!

I never did notice this post before so when I saw it today I read all of the posts on it.Well the OTIS company were a sponsor for me last November on my hunt in South Dakota with Escape to the Wild.By the way just got my mount back and am delighted it came out fantastic.OK back to OTIS I was fortunate to receive the complete kit,I mean everything one could possibly need for gun cleaning and optics all in one package. There is also a little field pouch that one can fill with whatever is expected of a trip afield. Now I used it a few times and it felt a little awkward. But I did watch the video/dvd and paid careful attention.Bottom line I dont use anything else now.It is so convenient to carry on ones belt. The optics cleaner is a nice little deal as well.A big thank you to OTIS for a fine product and they will have my support and my sons and daughters and a few of my stubborn buddies as well.
