I own a Remington 700 Mountain rifle. I have it in 280 caliber and this gun shoots great. I can do nickle groups using Federal ammo at 100 yards and with a rest. What I don’t care for is the 2 stage safety it has. I prefer the Ruger safety that has 3 positions. Since the 700 uses a magizine I don’t put a round in the chamber till I see what I want to shoot.

I am curious why you dont care for the safety.  Did you have a mishap with it?  Chambering a round when you see something to shoot at seems to me like it would be very noisy at a time that I would want to be quiet.  I dont own a 700 and dont know if there are any modifications that you could have done.  Maybe take it to a gunsmith?  A gun that shoots tacks with factory ammo should do even better with your own loads.  I wouldnt want to get rid of it for sure….....I dont know what options you have.  Maybe someone will surprise you with an answer.

Raymond, Welcome to the USA. I don’t have an answer for you on the Remington 700 safety issue. I mostly bow hunt and shoot muzzleloader, but hopefully some of our members will be able to answer your questions.  I’d be interested in learning more about those Feral Hogs in FL!

I’m more of a Ruger fan. I like the 3 stage safety. With my Remington its on safety and one click ready to fire. I hunt for hogs in a swamp buggy and with the vibration had the safety move to fire. I took my 700 deer hunting last November. I had 5 does with in 24 yards of my ground blind but I wanted horns so didn’t shoot. When I hunt with my Ruger 77 mk2 no matter what happens its 2 stages and then third you fire. To be honest since I use Shooters Choice oil and their cleaning products there isn’t much noise when I chamber a round.
Don’t get me wrong that 700 shoots great.. I was told by my gunsmith Remington has had safety problems in the past. This is a used rifle. The 280 here in Florida is hard to find ammo local. I been buying mine from Graff&Sons;. I rather shoot Hornady and that’s hard to find.
Hog hunting here is fantastic. Hard to go for free at least in my 8 years down here I never found a land owner that lets someone hunt for free on their land. I hunt high fence. The ranches been running hunts for meat hogs $100 and trophy boar is $300. Trust me hog hunting is exciting even to hunt meat hogs. One can shoot from 15 yards up to 300 yards. I usually hunt from a box blind or shoot from a swamp buggy with engine off. If you wound a hog best take it out with a second shot or it will gore you. Few bowhunters doing spot and stalk wounded a hog here and were gored.

About the only thing I could suggest is to install an aftermarket trigger group that might have the safety features you want. Might take some shopping around, but I would think someone makes something for ya.

Andrew this only happen while hunting out of a swamp buggy. Since the 700 shoots good . I’m going to leave it alone.. While in a swamp buggy I won’t have a load chambered. I hunted from a ground blind and the rifle was fine. Its the vibration that I guess caused it too come off safety.Trust me a swamp buggy vibrates a lot good thing I have my own teeth may of had them fall out too. Wife still reminds me that I bought 3 Leupold scopes and to make things even with her I took her to the jewlery store.  Then I bought a leupold 1 a year. Now she has done even better then my 3 Leupold scopes
Thanks

I am also a ruger fan although my rifles are of the older models and have the tang safety.  I havent had any problems with mine yet and I can be pretty damn quiet taking the safety off.  The newer models have the three stage safety and in my mind, are noisy.  Has anyone had any problems with the tang safety on a ruger?  I always wondered why they switched over.

My Ruger 77 mk2 is 10 years old. I also have the Ruger#1 light sportser in 243. I shot hogs and an Axis doe with the 243 caliber. I wish I thought it out before I bought the 243 more and got either the 270 or 7 mm mag.Oh well does to the job for me

I have a ruger # 1 in .300 weatherby mag.  My dad wondered why I would want to own a single shot, and I always told him that I very rarely shoot more than once and with a butt shell holder you would be amazed at how fast you can reload.  He now agrees.

Anyone looking for a sweet shooting rifle, try the #1 out.  You also get the benefit of having a long barrel but short overall length because the action is a falling block action.

My Ruger #1 is a 22 inch barrel. I love the gun and is my favorite. I also usually make 1 shot kills. I had a hog that I shot in the head with my 243 it was still shaking so used my 357 mag to finish it. Also shot a hog in the neck and it was dieing but to help it along I shot him in his head
My Ruger #1 is right on. Then its an 8 lb rifle since its a wood stock

With the new trigger also has a new safety. Old one to me was sloppy. this one is more tight. I like the new over the old one

I owe 3 remington 700s. My grandfathers passed down 30-06, a 7mm rem mag, and a 300 rem ultra mag. As far as my guns are concerned I’ve never had an issue it takes a good bit to trip mine to the fire position.
