Went out fishing with a buddy of mine to a TOP SECRET location on Sunday. This was the last cast of the day hooked this nice 21” Rainbow. Heres a couple pics. The best part of it is i just started tying my own flies and i caught this on a pattern i was testing.

Whenever I see someone casting a rod in the winter I know they are dedicated.  Nice fish Ed.  Are they lethargic in winter or do they still put up a tussle for you?

this stream is spring fed so it stays a constant temp…...i fought this one about 10min i was using a 7x tippet which is about 2.3lb test so you gotta be carefull. To answer your question about temp they do get really sluggish in colder water.

Well done Ed! Hopefully I get to Montana this year to hook a few that size. Know of some great spots for big Browns that don’t get much attention.

This creek can be very deciving its only about 10’ wide for the most part but its an awsome fishery. Loaded with Browns and Rainbows that get alot bigger than this one.

Ed,
Yep! It’s always the streams that are hard to get to or don’t look like “trophy water” that turn out the best. One of my favorite spots in Montana wasn’t fish-able 12 or so years ago because of pollution from mining, and is still ignored. Living in PA, you know what I mean. Thanks to the efforts of groups like ours, it’s full of 18” plus fish. That’s good sized in trout language! And yes, the smaller ones are safe to eat!

Ed,
Still jealous of that trout! Have a question. Gonna start practicing fly casting in my yard. Should I put a tiny split shot on the end of the leader (tippet?), or just let the line do the work ‘till I get the basics down?

Andrew,
tie a piece of yarn onto the end of your leader this really helps you see where the line is going, keep in mind the cast isn’t a fast motion just enough power to keep the loop from collapsing. if you want some good tips go to YOU-TUBE and type in fly casting. here’s the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qibcX0LdeIM this is the best video I’ve seen follow the lessons theres a couple of them but they explain casting very well.
