Lori and I are in Cancun this week. After canceled flights and a bus trip to Boston, we finally made it out of new england. We lost a day of vacation but with the bad weather back home and 80 degree weather here, im not complaining. Having a great time and am going out fishing on Tuesday. I dont care what I catch but they say I can catch a blue marlin. Ill keep my fingers crossed and give you all an update later in the week.
On a separate note…....the natives down here are very pushy. I thught i was going to have to face pant this pushy shop owner when he grabbed Lori by the armto get her in his store. More on that later.
Last time I was in Cancun I went out on a fishing trip! One of the best time’s I’ve ever had! Everyone on the boat got sick except for me and another girl. She and I caught about 30 Bonita! I was so exhausted after reeling in all of the fish that I got sick! Without a doubt, one of the best times I’ve ever had with a rod and reel. The Bonita (sort of like a Tuna) didn’t give much of a display, but it was one hell of a fight! Good luck on the boat Mike! Have a safe trip!
Well, we went out today and we were faced with a big question right away….....do we want to go out after blue marlin and maybe catch a fish of a lifetime or stay closer and have action. I wanted to go after the marlin cause thats just the way I am but everyone else wanted action. I ended up with 3 barracuda and a grouper. The barracuda put up one hell of a struggle. I dont know what a trophy is but the ones we were catching were around 4 feet long. My buddy hooked onto something that was pulling real hard and after about 15 minutes he brought in a huge grouper. The captain of the boat said it was truly a gift from the sea because he had been fishing cancun all his life and had only seen 2 others bigger. I think it must have been true because the mates were freaking out after they got it in the boat. Anyways, thats my fishing story. Maybe when I get home Ill get the video of my buddies grouper on here. Oh, it was 41 inches long and they said close to 50 kilos.
Guys, I looked up the conversion and Andrew is right Its about 2.25 pounds for every kilo. I can tell you without a doubt that I must have misunderstood what they said because there is no way that fish was anywhere near 100 pounds. Not having a chance to actually put it on a scale, you will have to trust me that it was somewhere between 40 and 50 pounds. When I get home I will post it up and I have one still picture from my video of Gary holding it up and it is pretty impressive when he is holding it upright.
We leave Friday for home and I am actually looking forward to getting home. Its funny how travelling makes you appreciate home. I spoke with a young gentleman today and he told me last year he was making the equivalent of 10 dollars a day. He is making 20 dollars a day now and happy. Its a sad story for the people here. Really makes you think I’ll tell you. I am so blessed to have the things that I have. Anyways, My next post will be from the comfort of my home. Catch you all later.
Finally got home!! Travel in the winter sucks!! Anyways, I just got done going through my things and wanted to post the video and pictures of my fishing day in Cancun. I will apologize ahead of time for the quality of the still pictures. All I had with me was my video camera. My wife took the still camera on her horseback riding trip. The gentleman with me on the video is Gary Johnson. He is a member of the IAM working out of SAPPI Fine Paper in Skowhegan Maine.
Andrew,
I asked ahead of time what was going to be done with the fish we caught because I obviously couldnt take them home. They said they didnt catch and release because it was too dangerous but they knew of several families that would take the fish and it would go to good use. Later into the day I asked again about the fish, and the mate that I was talking to said that they have one family in particular that they offer the fish to because the parents were deceased and the eldest sibling was bringing up 4 other children. I felt pretty good that the fish were going somewhere that they could be of good use. I would have liked to try the grouper. Everyone I talk to thats had it says its wonderful.
