Glad to hear Berkley is American made. I use them with a bait casting reel on a 6’ medium hvy rod with 50# spider wire for large mouth, northern pike, and muskies. A non fishing buddy of mine was using one on a Canadian pike fishing trip and he couldn’t keep the rod from setting on the side of the boat. I kept telling him he’s going to break the tip off if a big one hits at the boat. Sure enough a 40” northern hits right at the boat. The rod bent 90 degrees about the second eye down on the rod. You could hear the line running along the bottom of the boat clicking along the rivets as he made his run from the boat. The only thing he did right was hold on to the rod. He got him mounted, and is now an expert on northern fishing. When we picked him up at the taxidermist he looked in his mouth and remarked he thought some of his teeth would be gone- he could hear and feel them breaking off as he was fighting the fish. What a dweeb.
It takes practice to fish with a fly rod or a bait caster, but once you get it, it is easy. That spider wire is great. You don’t loose many lures, and you can feel things really well with it. Personally I don’t have as much trouble with the back lashes with the spider wire as with mono, but if you do get a good one, you better have an extra roll of line with you. It takes special knots to tie annything on to it also. They used to put a paper in the box with it showing the knot, but the last rolls I’ve bought didn’t have it.
I’ve been known to take the paper out of a box or two myself. From one year to the next sometimes I forget how to tie the knot.
I use Garcia bait casting reels. The spools on the reelsare more open that you can get your fingers in to get the back lashes out. Hope they are American made, altho I don’t think they are.
