I am going on a vacation in a few weeks to Cancun Mexico.  Can anyone steer me in the right direction as to what type of fishing I should be doing there?  I am in the Northeast corner of USA and I am way out of my league fishing there but I couldnt live with myself if I didnt at least try.  There are charters down there but I dont know who I can trust or if Im getting ripped off.  Anyone been there and have suggestions?  Anyone been there and have suggestions other than fishing?  Yeah, I know…...all inclusive drinking.  Well, there will be plenty of that too but I would like to hear from anyone who has experience going there.

Thanks

Check with the hotel, the people that they have connections with are pretty reputable. If they weren’t they would give the hotel a bad name. Also, I have heard that there is good sailfishing that runs out of Isle Mujers which is right off the coast of Cancun. Check some websites for what is running while you will be visiting. The best part about the trip will be the warm weather and sunshine.

The last time I went to Cancun we went and talked with the locals by a Pizza Hut across from Hotel Grand Oasis. They took us out in a 21ft boat and fished for Barracuda…they have Teeth like Alligators!!  We caught around 10 fish in 2 hours. A lot of fun and cheap, I believe we paid in total $250 for half of day with 6 of us in the boat, Corona’s were included!!

Thanks guys…......I have been getting the same advice from some people at work that have vacationed there.  They all say to inquire asap because they book up quick.  You can bet that it will be one of the first things I do.

Tim, I will try to keep my fingers away from those barracuda.  Thanks for the advice!!

Ive been there the last 3 years , I did an inshore in the Lagoon for snook and baby tarpon , I dont know if it was bad timing or what , but all we could manage was a bunch of small 3 to 5 lb snappers , and a bunch of 5 to 8 pound like jack fish , they were fun !!!

Last 2 years did off shore , caught Cuda and Dophin ... but with the amount of people pn the boat you reel in like 1 fish every hour , so I reeled in 2 fish in 6 hours ... wasnt real impressed

Like anyhting else you can get lucky n hit the mother load , timing is everything !!

Good Luck !!!!

i would only fish with someone that the resort recomended.

many many years ago me and 4 buddies went to brownsville, TX and decided to go to mexico. MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we went into Matamoros, mexico and met some of the local wildlife. WOMEN!!  just so you know, mexican men are jealous of americans messing with mexican women.  we got chased into the desert and thinking that we were looking at the northstar we ended up going south to Tampico, Mexico!!  holy crap! we tried to buy gas but no one took dollars! no one. so we stole gas out of 2 trucks and a tractor. when we were in brownsville a man told us to take gas with us. he said that they will water down the gas and trap us there and steal all we owned. we had 10 - 5 gallon gas cans on the roof of the van. we were through that by the time we got to Tampico.  scary crap im telling you. we made it back but we had 2 bullet holes in the van and my buddy still has that van and loves to tell the story if how we survived mexico. we saw things that cant be told on a open forum. they would ban me for sure. we did things that would should have gotten arrested for.  funny crap now but man i had nightmares for weeks.

be careful and stay on the resort area!!  and DO NOT DRINK THE WATER>  that is another story!

Bigbird, somehow that story about you doesnt surprise me!  I enjoyed my time in Cancun, Mexico however you must be on your guard every second while youre walking on the streets, even in the “hotel zone”.  I guess I can say I would go back but I think the next time Lori and I decide to take a winter vacation, we will try a different destination.

man we just wanted to see the real mexico!! and we did. we had a77 dodge van. a boogie van! fuzzy dash and all that! i loved that van!!

i even seen a real donkey show!!!!!  HOLY MOLY!!!!!!!  never again!! that was too much and the amigos did not like the fact that i told them that it was wrong to love animals that much!!  that was the down fall to the trip.  we were heading north when ronnie (my buddy who is now in prison for 25 years) hollered at a lady on the street and these guys jumped out of the building and opened fire on us!!  in real life, bullets GO THROUGH THE VEHICLE.  ronnie got a big BUT WHOPPING!!!  it is funny now but man it scared me bad!!

So tell me….....A trip to Mexico will change a “wild mans” life forever?  Did this experience turn you to the quiet life fishing for carp on the rivers? LOL
