for quite some time now the crew has dreamed of going to the north and catch some monster carp that we all have seen pictures of. after many long talks on the bank and some begging we finally worked out the trip of the year!! he are heading to Troy, NY and fish for monsters in the Tomhannock Reservoir with carp daddy and redcoat.!
well me and Tim left on Monday 6/1/09 at 10 AM on our way to NY via DC first. we wanted to accomplish a few things before we arrived in NY. first we wanted Tim catch a fish in front of the Jefferson memorial.
mission accomplished. Tim has pics on his camera of the scrappy 11-11 tidal basin gold.
also wanted to fish with Mark and that was accomplished as well. many came down to see us on that Tuesday include nearly every type of cop. bicycle cop, cop on horseback and cops in cars and helicopters.
word of advice. DON’T PICK THE CHERRIES OFF OF THE CHERRY TREES!!!! not that i did that but i was told not to.
the secret service even showed up to check us out. the helicopter was that close to us. i did not have to zoom in on him. we thought it was cool! he probably thought WE were cool cause we was fishing. even Hoppy made the walk from his office to the basin to see us. it was good to see my old friend. you clean up real good boo-boo!!
the 2nd thing we wanted to do was to fish with Craig and franklin on wed 6/3/09. we did that and it was great. me and Tim (cool dad) and Hoppy and Ted all fished that day and we were joined by Phil who wanted some more plugging in public secrets.
me and Tim arrived first to hains point and after talking to Craig he let us pic the spot. so i picked bay 18. bathrooms and shade trees. it is all i needed. well the wind changed direction on us and the trash flowed right into All our lines and we played cast and retrieve. well after a short time i had a run and i knew it was a GOOD run. it run my big butt up the river for 300 yards then it ran back down the river. Tim (net boy) did a fantastic job of keeping up with me and netting my Potomac River pull-down.
25-5 of pure gold!!! and a new DC PB to boot!!
after a while of sitting and chatting with old friends and new ones and getting our whooping. we headed on north with a tail between our legs and smiles on our faces.

now we left at 5pm on wed and got a taste of DC traffic. WOW!!!!! after 9 hours we arrived in Troy, NY at 2am on Thursday. we caught a few hours of sleep and then it was off to the wal-mart for a license and to city hall for the “tommy” permit. we met up with Rick and away we went to get with Iain and our date with the fishes. we got set up on the bank around 11:30am or so and i saw things i had recognized in pics. we were sitting were Monsters had been. here is an old one of Joels monster.
so the excitement level is increasing. the visions of 30+ fish dance in my head. you could see feeding bubbles and crusiers swimming around like sharks but after a night on the bank and about 24+ hours straight with out a run i had to know why this what happening. so we packed up and it did not take long to figure it out….....SPAWNING WAS IN FULL SWING!!!!! fornication wins over feeding every time. but we tried all day Friday to find feeding fish but it was not to be. rick and Iain ran us all over the place looking for pull-downs but it was not meant to be. rick and Iain went above and beyond the call of duty and they never gave up.
we got up early Sat. morning and was back on the “Tommy”. after a few hours of nothing we headed to Hudson River. NOW WE ARE TALKING!!!!! we fished it earlier Friday but the homeless and boats keep us from catching but with a Brand new, unused Saturday morning on us he knew today was the day. Tim hit first on the ever popular plug of perfection that perfected with another secret ingredient form Duncan’s restaurant
the day had us catching some very nice “HUDSON RIVER BRAWLER’S”
the pictures are on so many different cameras that it will take a few days to e-mail them around . but i remember mine were 18-4 common and the 12-6 mirror. when we fish together we tend to split the bounty so to speak. all rods are open for catching and he do take turns, well for the most part. some of us have to be reminded from time to time but we have fun for sure. and that is what it is all about!.
now for my favorite part!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GUS’ HOT DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this place is 50+ years old and the chili has been cooking this long! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
some guy ate 47 hot dogs in 25 minutes!! next year that will not be a burp in my mouth. I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!
people all i can say is that my 2 biggest PB were Rick (carp daddy) walker and Iain (redcoat) Murray!!!
2 outstanding gentlemen who never blinked a eye at any request we might have had. and we had a few!
these fellars are first class!!! and to everyone around the area i am sorry we kept this a secret but we had our reasons and it fell through but now you know EVERY year around the first of JUNE we will be invading the Area to catch a few monsters. fish and human alike.
