The August issue of Outdoor Life has an excellent article on the increased popularity of using AR10 and AR15 rifles for game hunting.  The selection of rounds just continues to grow.  Armalite and at least 1 other offer an AR10 type rifle in on of the .300 magnums in addition to the several manufacturers of the .308 chambering.  Several manufacturers are offering a 6.8 round in the AR15 platform and Bushmaster is offering a .450 in partnership with Hornady in developing this round.  With the inherent accuracy low recoil and light weight of these rifles I expect as more people get introduced to them the popularity will increase.
I have personally taken whitetail deer with a .223 chambered AR15 and am going to use a .308 chambered AR10 this year.

Nothing wrong with them at all.  Some versions shoot very well and on a good dog town they are way more easy to work than a bolt.

I enjoy shooting them in competition and for fun but they lack the nostalgic appeal with me for hunting.

I can appreciate your point about nostalgia.  In some hunting scenerios the magazine well can get in the way.

Here is the link to the article on-line.  What is missing from the on-line article is the side-bar commentary which is printed in the August Outdoor Life issue along with the main body of the article.  The commentary discusses 2nd amendment issues as they pertain to gun control.  Hunters and Sportsmen/Sportswomen who embrace the banning of our guns based on aesthetic features and arbitrary “sporting purpose” definitions are not doing themselves any favors.  Some of the legislation being proposed will ban or put restrictions on traditional auto-loading hunting rifles like the Remington 7400 and the Ruger Mini 14 and even collectable rifles like the M1 Carbine and the M1 Garand. There is a difference between making a personal choice not to own or hunt with a specific rifle and forcing your standards onto others by allowing or even encouraging politicians to legislate away the rights of others to hunt or shoot with these rifles.

Well guys, I like the AR like everyone else but my best gunon the line is my M1 Garand3006. When that clip pings out, the hair stands stands on end!

George S Patton said : “The M1 rifle is the greatest single battle implement ever devised by man.”

The M1 is like a Ford flathead V8.  It is dependable, nostalgic, nice to look at and gets the job done.  You just have to recognize that it will never be a 427 SOHC.

While it’s not a black one I like to use my M1A when not doing too much walking. If I’m in an area where I can move around a good bit I still prefer the Win 94, 30-30.

I have personally killed more deer with my Marlin .30-30 than any other rifle I own.  With the advent of the Leverrevolution round,  they are now a reasonable 200+ yard rifle.  The M1A is a rifle which I currently do not own.  I was fortunate enough to be able to use a M14 on loan from the WI State Rifle club for a year for High Power matches but unfortunately the CMP recalled all of the M14s from the states as the program was becoming troublesome to administer.  Loaning out “machine guns” and keeping track of them was more trouble than what it was worth as more people have gone to the AR platform. I am just grateful for my term with it.
