Went fishing yesterday and we absolutely nailed the togue on one of my favorite ponds. The trick to this little pond is to be there during that time when the smelt run is done and they are on the surface “washing off”. For those who dont know, lake trout have a slime on them especially when they spend alot of time hugging the bottom. In the spring they come up to the surface chasing smelts and they do alot of rolling on the surface. This washes most of the slime from them. The weather wasnt the best and as a matter of fact I was wearing my ice fishing gear. The setup I use for this is a little different but it works well and is a lot of fun. I am trolling sewed on smelts on an 8 1/2 foot fly rod with a shimano 1000gt mooching reel loaded with mono. Nothing fancy just sew the smelt on and make it slow roll. I stopped counting at a dozen lakers and we caught several more so I am thinking we caught around 16 or 17. They were all around 24-26 inches and 5 to 6 pounds. We had one that was close to 8 pounds but I had to stop filming becuase my cousin ended up hooking up at the same time and we had to shut the camera down. People may laugh at the last video and I openly admitted that I was “hamming” it up in front of the camera, but it was actually a heartfelt shout out to all my friends and staff of the USA. Sportsmen are great and being involved in a union is even better. Combine the 2 and we are making a legacy for ourselves. God bless the USA means alot to me in life and those words are echoed in my mind for this organization. Hope you enjoy the vids and please dont laugh too hard. Im just a redneck Mainer who enjoys the outdoors.
