Duck hunting is a lot of fun but can get pricey when it comes to gear. I guess the first thing you’ll need to do is find a spot to hunt. A creek, lake or marsh would work fine. Watch where the birds are going and try to set up in the exact same spot.Until you’ve really learned to call well you’ll do better just letting the decoys work. Almost any duck will decoy to a mallard so a dozen mallard decoys are a must. Good luck!

If you want to hunt ducks, get used to the cold.

FOR GOD’S SAKE SCOTT, DON’T DO IT. IT WILL RUIN YOU LIFE. DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT GETTING STARTED IN SUCH AN ADICTIVE, VILE AND DISGUSTING SPORT. Just kidding!! OK, it is addictive, especially after the first pair of cupped wings are in your face, flaps out, gear down and BANG! But certainly not the other stuff (unless you ask my wife) As with any form of hunting, it’s easy to get carried away with expenses. You can still be productive on a budget. Check garage sales, private adds in local papers, thrift stores etc.. for used gear for starters. It doesn’t take much to get started, besides, as the season winds down, smaller deke spreads work better anyway. Read books, check online articles and stuff and you too could soon be walking around all crazed with blood shot eyes, shunned by your family…......

Scott,

The other thing I would do is to try and find some people in your area that might be duck hunters as well.  The next best thing to owning a lot of the equipment you would need is finding a friend who ownes it and will let you go out with them or outright let you borrow some of it.  If you don’t have any friends that you know hunt, you might check to see if you have a local Ducks Unlimited chapter and maybe you can contact their chapter chairman and just see if there are some good places to get out in your area.  I also would talk to the folks at any of your local hunting stores as they usually are flush with good information.  One thing I have found about most sportsmen and women is that they LOVE to get new folks into the sport so if some of these folks hear that you are interested in giving it a try they just might offer to bring you out one time to see how you like it.  Just a thought.  Regardless…good luck and let us know how it goes.

Ironman,

If you are serious about taking up duck hunting, I have nine cheap plastic decoys that have not had the dust blown off them in ten years. These are mallards and black duck decoys. They are yours if you want them for free. Send me an e-mail with the address and I will ship them to you after Christmas. If you don’t use them, pass them along to someone else that can put them to good use.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Bill

Bill,

What a cool gesture and another reason I love this organization.  Thanks for helping to continue the outdoor heritage with one of your union brothers.

Good Luck! Once you start, you are not going to want to start.  I killed my first ducks yesterday, some nice Teal Drakes.  I live in Arizona and we jumped some ponds on the Reservation, quite a variety of different ducks to shoot at, and had a great dove hunt as well.  If you ever come to Arizona, we have some decent ducks here to shoot at. My boyfriend has hunted and fished all his life and is a taxedermist, he is in trouble, me and my girls are addicted!!!! My youngest daughter, 13, shot her first ducks too and is in the truck to go every chance she gets!
