Shot this Kodiak Brown Bear in the Spring of 2006. It squared at 9ft. -91/2 inches. This was a one shot kill with my .35 Whelen built on a ‘98 Mauser action with a Shilen Barrel.  After iIdowned this brute, my guide Mike Munsey, who also owns Munsey’s Brown Bear Camp on Kodiak Island, Alaska, walked me backed to the spot where fired the shot. He said, “do you know how close you where when you fired.”  I answered, “I never heard the shot go off”.”  Mike used his range finder from that spot and it came up, 16yds. give or takea ccouple of feet.  I entered this story in, ” THE NORTH AMERICAN HUNTER”, and it’s contest of a one shot kill and I won the First Prize. It was a Thompson Pro Hunter Black Powder Rifle. grin

Great story - I can see why it took first place!  Ran into a grizzly myself in 96, rather floated into one - I was on a zodiak near Selawik AK fishing for pike and varden while counting ducks for the usfws; got way too close to the bank of the river without paying attention (concentrating on not casting into the dwarf willows) when from behind us a grizzly came crashing down the bank from the tundra to within feet of the boat.  We sat breathless as the current swept us away (seemed like hours) neither of us talked for about an hour after - realizing how ridiculously stupid we were smelling like pike and varden, lunch leftover still in the bottom of the boat, and no one remembered to take the .44 out of the dry-sac.  Whew.

man that is incredible.

i ran into a 200 pound black bear in North Ga one day while i too was fishing in a stream. i was not even thinking about bears and then all of a sudden i seen a small, very small cub. i froae then started looking around for momma. she came down a feeder creek right at me. i took off down the stream when i passed the cub she stopped. i ran about a mile and came up on another fella fishing and told him what was up there. we both decided to go back to the trucks and leave. i reported it to the rangers and they said that was common around there.

that event scared me but i cant imagine a bear like a grizzly coming at you. ohh  gulp
