Yes, that is correct. The great state of Kentucky has an elk population and offers a lottery draw for limited elk tags. These are available for residents and non-residents alike. I hail from this area of Eastern Kentucky and the elk are definitely flourishing there. On my most recent visit home, it was nice to see that the KYDOT had put up caution signs at known elk crossings. This is great news to those of us that yearn to see this program succeed and bring big game hunting opportunities back to Kentucky. The elk were indigienous to Ky. way back when, so this is a natural setting for them. The mountains, and large flats left by reclaimed strip mining, and the heavy mast crops are beginning to show up in some large bulls.
If you have the time and the inclination, you can apply on line for a cost of $10.00 which is inexpensive to get a chance to hunt the elusive elk and especially East of the Mississippi River. The money from the tag lottery applications is well spent and the herd continues to increase.

You can read about the program and see some of the elk harvested. Come on down to Ky. if you get drawn, and step back in time to a day when the East was as wild as the West.
