I’ve been researching Semi Auto .22LR and .22 WMR rifles and handguns and want to stick with USA Brands. I know Colt, Winchester, and Remington used to be Union shops but don’t know if they still are or not. Of the three Remington is the only .22 semi-auto rifle with the 597 that offers both LR and WMR chambers, but have read about issues with the extractor and trigger group. I’ve not found any .22 WMR handguns besides possibly a used Kel-Tec PMR-30 or AMT Automag II. Everything else would be a .22LR and the ones that feel most comfortable in my larger hands are of course not USA made, notably the Sig Sauer .22 Mosquito. Other rifle options I’ve found are the Marlin 795 and the Ruger 10/22 but both are only available in LR unless I find one used or modified for WMR. If I found better reviews I’d consider the Canadian Savage 64 but I’ve not found much positive at all. LR is fine for cans and paper but I like the extra inertia with the WMR should I feel the desire or need to go small game hunting, not to mention some pest control from Raccoon and Possum. If LR is the way to go I’ll just be happy with the fact that ammo is dirt cheap and easy to stock up to ridiculous amounts and keep my Marlin 25MN for hunting.

Not sure if there is a more appropriate place to put this post but I’ve not found any other firearms discussion while browsing other forums. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I ordered this cross draw holster online from a gun auction site. Best quality I could find at a very good price. This was a custom fit for my .45 cal caplock pistol. Service was very prompt with excellant communication. I would recommend Drake’s to anyone interested in good quality, value priced, custom gun leather.

I have a thompson encore that I have multible barrels for. I had a 270 pistol barrel for it, but I found out it is not legal to shoot a dear with it in Illinois.I’m thinking about trading it for a .460 barrel. I guess from reading on the web you can shoot certain 45 calibur shells in it. Does anyone have one of these? I can’t imagine the recoil couldn’t be much worse than the 270. Although I was shooting 130 gr. bullets in the 270, and I would be using 200 gr. in the 460. Don’t really need this 460 because I have a 44mag revolver, but PaPa needs a new toy.

LABOR DAY

Labor Day is upon us. I hope you all have a great LABOR DAY. This is the day for celebration for the fruits of our LABOR. I will be walking in the third oldest UNION parade in the USA on Monday. It will be held in Petersburg, In. It started in 1886 and is still going strong today. I’ll be dressed in my union hat and shirt and will be a proud as a pecock. It’s the only thing that made the middle class of workers in this great country. THAT’S THE UNION so let people know it. There will be 23 different Unions with 43 different locals walking Monday. GOD BLESS THE UNIONS AND THEIR LEADERS.

Therma-CELL Unit

Every year, I’m confronted by a long list of gadgets and gizmos designed to make life for the hunter/angler/outdoorsperson better, more comfortable, more reliable, fill-in-the-blank. And each year, I’m disappointed to discover that the marketing surrounding said new gimmick is much more effective than is said gimmick.

Until now. For those of you who haven’t tried the Therma-CELL Units…well, let me put this simply - you should get one. Bottom line, at least for me, it’s the best $19.99 you’ll spend this season. I’ve used the small hand-held units in western Washington on August and September bear hunts, in September for squirrels and early geese in the Midwest, and in early May during Spring turkey season - NOTE: Nothing worse than a Double Bull blind filled with blood-thirsty mosquitoes! - and have but two works to say on their performance and effectiveness - THEY and WORK. During ‘07, Julie and I have cranked the units up during Spring gobbler season, Minnesota’s early goose season, squirrel outings in the skeeter-infested timber, and most recently, on a Youth Deer Hunt in Linn County, Iowa, where the does and the mosquitoes ran neck-and-neck in terms of numbers. Again, excellent performance - just as marketed.

Rather than repeat myself here, take a look at the company’s website - http://www.thermacell.com. Most Wal-Mart stores will carry both the units ranging in price from $16 to $20, along with the refill packs (butane canisters and repellent pads) for right around $6. Several accessories exist, including an illuminated “Patio Lantern” that combines both “mood lighting” and the same butane-powered heater/repellent as the smaller units. For my dollars, however, I would suggest one of the cordura holsters - the quick-release snap-click is worth the $10 or so alone, and makes the unit easy to hang on a fanny pack, blind bag, backpack, or belt. I snap one on the military style ammo pouch I carry while squirrel hunting - it keeps the unit accessible, yet out of the way.

I can’t say this about everything I see in the Spring and Fall, gadget-wise, but this one I highly recommend - M.D. Johnson
