CRAPPIES AT MARK TWAIN LAKE MISSOURI

Made a trip to Mark Twain Lake in Missouri to try some crappie fishing. In a day and a half I caught 25 crappie from 10 to 12 inches long. They weren’t really biting that well, I was lucky to find a spot that had some fish. No one else was doing any good. Lucky me.

HAPPY MOM’s DAY to our Union sisters

My mom was the real backbone to all our family outdoor adventures while growing up. Her meal planning was always the best, and she was a master at cleaning and cooking the trout we would catch. There was never any gear left behind or forgotten on our trips. She kept us entertained with a multitude of games and campfire stories. Her knowledge of the vegitation in any area we stayed kept us out of the bad stuff and fixed up the good stuff for us to eat. We always had clean clothes on extended trips and then did a lot more cleaning and stowing of the gear upon return in preparation of another trip. So happy mom’s day to all our union families.

50 Years of Ashtabula River Contamination Settled for $5.5 Million

The U.S. Justice Department and Ohio Attorney General have reached a proposed settlement of claims for injuries to natural resources caused by past releases and discharges of hazardous substances into the lower Ashtabula River and harbor on Lake Erie in northeast Ohio dating back to the 1940s.

The consent decree, valued at $5.5 million, was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio on behalf of the natural resource trustees, including the Department of the Interior, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

“This agreement will compensate the public for precious natural resources that were damaged by hazardous pollutants released into the Ashtabula watershed over more than half a century,” said Ignacia Moreno, assistant attorney general for the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the Department of Justice.

Do You Agree With the Anglers’ Bill of Rights?

Here’s a great way to let your voice be heard! KeepAmericaFishing™ is asking for you to sign their Anglers’ Bill of Rights and join efforts with our nation’s 60 million anglers who say that we want to keep our nation’s public waters open, clean and abundant with fish.

To find out more, visit: http://keepamericafishing.salsalabs.com/o/6394/signup_page/abor

KeepAmericaFishing Anglers’ Bill of Rights:
As the voice of the American angler, we believe that:
- Every American has a right to sustainably fish on our nation’s public waterways.
- Our right to fish is being undermined. As one of our nation’s most popular outdoor sports and a cornerstone of fisheries conservation, recreational fishing is worthy of protecting now and for generations to come.

I proudly support the following statements:
- Anglers have the right to sustainably fish on our nation’s public waterways.
- Fisheries conservation management practices need to be based on sound scientific data that demonstrate clear benefits to the health of the fishery.
- Anglers are our nation’s most visible fisheries conservationists committed to conserving our nation’s natural resources.

Went fishing yesterday and we absolutely nailed the togue on one of my favorite ponds. The trick to this little pond is to be there during that time when the smelt run is done and they are on the surface “washing off”. For those who dont know, lake trout have a slime on them especially when they spend alot of time hugging the bottom. In the spring they come up to the surface chasing smelts and they do alot of rolling on the surface. This washes most of the slime from them. The weather wasnt the best and as a matter of fact I was wearing my ice fishing gear. The setup I use for this is a little different but it works well and is a lot of fun. I am trolling sewed on smelts on an 8 1/2 foot fly rod with a shimano 1000gt mooching reel loaded with mono. Nothing fancy just sew the smelt on and make it slow roll. I stopped counting at a dozen lakers and we caught several more so I am thinking we caught around 16 or 17. They were all around 24-26 inches and 5 to 6 pounds. We had one that was close to 8 pounds but I had to stop filming becuase my cousin ended up hooking up at the same time and we had to shut the camera down. People may laugh at the last video and I openly admitted that I was “hamming” it up in front of the camera, but it was actually a heartfelt shout out to all my friends and staff of the USA. Sportsmen are great and being involved in a union is even better. Combine the 2 and we are making a legacy for ourselves. God bless the USA means alot to me in life and those words are echoed in my mind for this organization. Hope you enjoy the vids and please dont laugh too hard. Im just a redneck Mainer who enjoys the outdoors.

Wildlife Professionals Oppose Bill Opening Public Backcountry to Development

As members of the Senate and House of Representatives weigh the future of legislation that would dramatically change the management of some of the nation’s most valuable public lands, more than 200 fish and wildlife scientists and managers, including 12 former directors of state fish and game agencies, are uniting in vocal opposition to the Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act (H.R. 1581/S. 1087), the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership announced Wednesday.

Passage of the bill would “facilitate the fragmentation and degradation of rare high-value intact fish and wildlife habitat and profoundly and permanently diminish backcountry hunting and fishing opportunities” stated the fish and wildlife managers in a letter to members of Congress.

“Decades of scientific research have strongly reinforced the connection between road building and negative impacts on wildlife and fish habitat and populations,” the letter states. “These impacts often spill over to reduce public hunting and fishing opportunities. As professional fish and wildlife managers, it is our responsibility to advocate on behalf of policies that benefit our shared fish and wildlife resource.”
