Hey everyone! As promised here are a few videos from my recent weekend of fishing. Fishing was very slow and we had to resort to sewing smelts on. Usually this time of year we are trolling spoons but they simply werent taking them (well, the bass were but we were fishing for salmon and togue).

I have to be honest, I didnt take my camera every day so I didnt capture many fish being caught. Here is what I did video.

Before I say any more let me first apologize for the poor quality of these videos. My buddy Ray got his pinky in the lens on this first video. He and I were in the boat and he was trying to steer the boat, move fishing poles, and video all at the same time. This fish came off the hook right as Ray was trying to net it. Luckily Ray heard me say that he came off and made a last ditch attempt to net it and this time, it went our way. I always underestimate fish size if I dont actually measure them. Ray and I pretty much catch and release Lakers and I estimated on the video that this fish was about 7 pounds (a nice Togue for Maine standards). After catching other togue, I feel this fish was a little bigger than that.

This fishing trip was probably one of the worst for me as far as catching fish. We arrived on a Sunday and the top of the water was loaded with the remnants of a major bug hatch. The people before us told us that the fish pigged out on the hatch the evening before and they shut right down. We never caught a salmon for 4 days and when they did start biting, they were few and far between. I will throw a couple videos on this thread of our trip.

Went fishing yesterday and we absolutely nailed the togue on one of my favorite ponds. The trick to this little pond is to be there during that time when the smelt run is done and they are on the surface “washing off”. For those who dont know, lake trout have a slime on them especially when they spend alot of time hugging the bottom. In the spring they come up to the surface chasing smelts and they do alot of rolling on the surface. This washes most of the slime from them. The weather wasnt the best and as a matter of fact I was wearing my ice fishing gear. The setup I use for this is a little different but it works well and is a lot of fun. I am trolling sewed on smelts on an 8 1/2 foot fly rod with a shimano 1000gt mooching reel loaded with mono. Nothing fancy just sew the smelt on and make it slow roll. I stopped counting at a dozen lakers and we caught several more so I am thinking we caught around 16 or 17. They were all around 24-26 inches and 5 to 6 pounds. We had one that was close to 8 pounds but I had to stop filming becuase my cousin ended up hooking up at the same time and we had to shut the camera down. People may laugh at the last video and I openly admitted that I was “hamming” it up in front of the camera, but it was actually a heartfelt shout out to all my friends and staff of the USA. Sportsmen are great and being involved in a union is even better. Combine the 2 and we are making a legacy for ourselves. God bless the USA means alot to me in life and those words are echoed in my mind for this organization. Hope you enjoy the vids and please dont laugh too hard. Im just a redneck Mainer who enjoys the outdoors.

Hit the Mississippi River near Winona, MN a few weeks ago. The inland lake season doesn’t open here in MN until May 12, but the River is a continuous season in areas. Took a couple of buddies of mine out for the weekend and needless to say, we slaughtered the fish!! I bet we caught 100 fish on Saturday alone!! We caught Walleyes, Saugers, Jumbo Perch, Smallmouth Bass and one dandy Northern Pike. We had a shore lunch of Walleyes twice but didn’t keep anything else. Needless to say, we had a heck of a time! Thought i would share! Good Fishin’

I took my wife and daughter out to my ice shack on Great Pond yesterday to try and catch white perch. I was trying a different fishing spot because my traditional perch hole wasnt producing. We put out 10 traps, though we were allowed 15. The perch were biting so well that we simply couldnt manage them all. In fact, I was getting so tired of chasing down flags, that I set a couple lines just under the ice so I could get away from the perch and have a break. I was kinda surprised to see one of the topwater traps pop up because we were fishing in 35 feet of water. My first thought was that it must be a brown trout but when I got there and grabbed the line, it was apparent that this was nothing I had ever had on a line before. I have caught some big lakers but this was much heavier. I fought this fish for about 10 minutes before I was lucky enough to direct his head into the hole. My daughter who was standing pretty close by was scared to death when I flopped him on the ice. We had been catching 10 inch white perch all morning and she had no idea that there was fish that big in the lake. She said, “Thats why I am scared to swim in lakes”. One of our favorite shows to watch is River Monsters with Jeremy Wade. Its not a river monster, but in my daughters eyes it is a lake monster!
