Sure hope those who went out had better luck than me! My work schedule didn’t help, but probably didn’t matter much ‘cause the birds just weren’t there. Last week I was workin’ swing, so I planned an O’day hunt before work. Then beginning this week, I went back to days, so I planned an evening hunt. Then at 3:00 PM Thursday, just a 1/2 hour before quitting time, it was overtime. I got home too late to make the traditional O’day hunt. First year in I don’t know how long I missed it. So after work Friday my wife and I got out and watched the sun set without a single bird flying in to us at a “normally” very productive spot. Had some morning fires to put out today, but went out to another “normally” productive location tonight, only to have one come in, it was one shot and one bird. Makes for a pretty good average on paper, but not much to eat. The property owners 9 year old grandson and his dad took three on the backside of their property, so I gave him my loner to add to their pot. I know the birds are out there somewhere, just not where we were. Probably the worst opening I have ever experienced. At least I know my season will not go down from here.

I got the pleasure of taking a youth hunter again this yeat to the great state of KY. This young man was a fill in, I had a hunter lined up for almost a year and at the last minute he had to back out. I made a phone call to a friend who I new his son hunted, and got a hell yes lets go right away. The young mans name is Josh, and he had never turket hunted before. We scheduled a day for him to come to the farm for some lesson and to make sure the youth gun I have was sighted in for him. Everything was good and a few days later we were off. The hunt lasted all of 40 minutes. Multiple birds gobbling in the trees with this bruiser only about 100 yards behind us. After he pitched out of his tree it only took about 10 minutes and he was in the decoys DEAD. 26lbs, and a 11.5 inch beard, not bad for his first.

Just had our normal cold (cool) spell run thru before season and the little birds thinned out some from a scouting trip yesterday. Don’t matter much, the hunt is still on. Haven’t missed an opening day since… actually don’t remember missing one, but must have somewhere over my last 40 plus years of huntin’. Not all the same people this year, one daughter in Idaho startin’ college tomorrow and one that started Sac State today. Guns cleaned and lubed, shells inventoried, lawn chairs set and will pick up the ice Wed. morn. on the way. Haven’t been able to get out and hunt since the close of duck/goose the end of last Jan. I AM READY!!!
