USA Sponsors UAW Sportsmen’s Day Featuring Waddell

Union members and outdoor enthusiasts recently came together in the spirit of brotherhood at the UAW Local 1853 Sportsmen’s Day sponsored by the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA). The event, steeped in fellowship and fun, was held at the UAW Local 1853 union hall in Spring Hill, Tennessee on June 15, 2009 and provided outdoor entertainment for the whole family.
"When we partnered with the USA to host our first-ever Sportsmen’s Day, our goal was to provide the opportunity for our members and their families to participate in a day of free fun while learning about the outdoors," said Mike Herron, UAW Local 1853 Chairman. "We also wanted to give our members a chance to put their worries about the current economic situation aside and just enjoy the day."
The event featured well-known hunting personality Michael Waddell of the Outdoor Channel’s number one rated TV show Bone Collector along with his friend and colleague, Nick Mundt. Waddell and Mundt mingled with the crowd throughout the day, sharing hunting stories, offering advice and signing autographs.
"There is no bigger brotherhood than the union," said Waddell. "And I think the hunting community feels similar because it’s also a brotherhood and a culture where everyone bonds together. Even if there were people at the event who don’t hunt, they could understand the bond of hunters because they understand the bond of union members."
Along with the Bone Collector crew, other local vendors provided fun activities for both adults and youth. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) was on hand to answer questions and sell hunting and fishing licenses. They also set up an archery range where youths could test their skills with a bow. Thanks to an FLW simulator, provided by Chevy, guests had the chance to experience the excitement of tournament fishing and the exhilaration of piloting a Ranger boat across open waters at high speeds. To top it off, adults could enter a raffle for the Remington gun that was awarded at the event.
"The opportunity to meet Michael Waddell and Nick Mundt combined with interactive exhibits gave members of the UAW and the local community a chance to have a good time with their families, while learning what the union and the USA is all about," said USA Deputy Director Mike d’Oliveira. "We were thrilled to be part of a fun day for all."
