  • bio_headshot_tim_bindlTim Bindl, Pacific Flyway Regional Coordinator

Tim Bindl joined the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA) in January 2009. Prior to joining the team full time, Tim had worked as volunteer/Pro Staff for USA since their inception back in 2007. Being part of the International Association of Machinist since April 2007, he has been working with all trades of the AFL CIO and traveling most of the country. His greatest joy is working with the men and women that have the same core values, hard working and honesty as that of the union brotherhood. Tim has been a member of the Wisconsin Bowhunters Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Turkey Federation, and North American Hunting Club off and on for the past 10 years. Tim received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of WI -Eau-Claire.

Born and raised on the family farm in Reedsburg, WI, Tim has enjoyed hunting the back 40 and fishing in Narrows Creek bottoms. His father was very instrumental in teaching him that hard work ethics stem great appreciate for what we accomplish in the future. Same holds true with the conservation movement that is being carried on with the TRCP and USA. In 2008, Tim and his wife Tara moved to La Crosse, WI to settle. It is here they were able purchase their first piece of hunting ground. Tim has found great success with both his passion for archery and muzzleloader hunting. He has harvested 3 Pope-Young White-tails, a Black Bear, and numerous Eastern Turkeys over the years. They both enjoy the outdoors from hiking 14teeners in Colorado, walleye fishing on Canadian waters, to camping in state parks. Conservation and protecting the places to hunt and fish are a top priority on his list.

Rockwell_8-6-09_004Nate Whiteman joined Union Sportsmen’s Alliance in December 2008 from BMA Media Group, a Union Marketing Firm. His extreme love and enthusiasm for the great outdoors matched by his vast knowledge and experience dealing with Organized Labor is the perfect combination needed to lead the membership recruiting efforts for the USA. He has also been a dues paying member of IUPAT Local 639 for nearly 8 years.

Though the perfect day for Nate would be wading waist deep in near freezing swamp water with his trusty hunting buddy "Woody", his 10 year old Yellow Lab, his fondest memories are that of catching worms and baiting hooks for his two, now teenage kids, Josh and Rachel when they were very young. "If you introduce a child to the woods and water when they are very young, they may leave it for a while, when they get their own little social lives, but they will be back".

Nate was introduced to the joy of the outdoors at a very early age by his grandfather, fishing for Crappies and catfish on Indian Lake in Ohio. He now resides in Concord, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland with his wife, Suzanne, and their two teenage children.

bio_headshot_jim_klatt2Jim Klatt is Midwest Regional Coordinator for the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He joined the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership in 2004 after retiring from his marketing and advertising agency business in Minneapolis. He worked as a grassroots organizer for TRCP conservation programs across the country and helped launch the cooperative efforts between TRCP and Labor Unions that eventually lead to the formation of the USA.

Jim has been a conservation leader for many years both in Minnesota and around the country. He helped found the Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Alliance in 1994 and was president for 8 years. MOHA was instrumental in passing two landmark constitutional amendments in Minnesota. The first, in 1998, guarantees the right to hunt, fish and trap in the state, and the second, in 2009, dedicates a percentage of the state sales tax to conservation. In 2008 he was selected as Conservation Person of the Year in Minnesota.

He is a graduate of Michigan State University and spent many years working in communications, from editing national magazines, to directing communications and recruitment for Peace Corps and VISTA. He has hung his, hat, and hunted and fished, in British Columbia, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Washington, Missouri and New York.

USA Supports Shoot For A Cure

For the past six years, Shoot For A Cure has introduced hundreds of new people to the fun and excitement of sporting clays shooting while raising tens of thousands of dollars for leukemia research.

Shoot For A Cure was established in 2003 with just 86 shooters at the first event in Northern California. Last year, Shoot For A Cure held six events covering 12 states and raised over $100,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. All of the proceeds support the 30 Leukemia research facilities nationwide. Today, the cure rate is just over 87%, and Shoot For A Cure aims to help eradicate the diseases by 2015.

This exciting sporting clays charity event attracts hundreds of new shooters every year, and nearly 80 percent of Shoot For A Cure participants are Union members. Each event is hosted by Union locals, Building Trades councils and Central Labor councils. The event Executive Committees and Co-Chairs are comprised of Local Union Presidents, International Vice Presidents, State AFL-CIO Presidents and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society volunteers. The shoots bring together Labor Unions, outdoor organizations, contractors, business leaders and elected officials in support of a great cause.

Over the next five years, Shoot For A Cure hopes to establish regional and national championships, host at least 12 shoots per year and raise $500,000 annually for Leukemia research.

Shoot For A Cure’s generous corporate sponsors include: Union Sportsmen’s Alliance, Browning Firearms, Fiocchi Ammunition, White Flyer Targets, Briley Chokes, Yamaha, HI-VIZ Sights, Shooter’s Choice Products, Wild Wings and Ideal Outdoor.

    Welcome to the USA

In 1912, President Theodore Roosevelt, the man from whom we draw our inspiration, remarked, “There can be no greater issue than that of conservation in this country.”

These words ring as true today as they did when first spoken. The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) is a coalition of the nation’s leading conservation organizations, labor unions and individual hunters and anglers representing the entire spectrum of our nation’s outdoor sporting community and is dedicated to fulfilling a joint promise to “Guarantee You a Place to Hunt and Fish.”

In concert with our partner organizations, the TRCP has created a bold new program called the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA). The USA is a truly a one-of-a-kind hunting and fishing association designed exclusively for conservation-minded union members, retirees and their families that hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors.

Creating a program like the USA benefits the TRCP, our AFL-CIO Union partners, and most important the future of conservation. However, if we are to bequeath a robust outdoor heritage to our children and our children’s children, we must be diligent, persistent, and, above all, unified in our efforts to conserve fish and wildlife. USA offers you the means to do just that, with the bonus of having fun in the process.

By joining the USA you will automatically receive a free membership in the TRCP. We are thrilled  to add your voice to the growing chorus of those who love the outdoors and want to help shape our nations hunting, fishing and conservation policies. We will be contacting you soon to let you know how you can get involved with the TRCP to make a difference.

For union members who hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors, the USA has the potential to be among the most cherished and tangible benefits brought to you by your union.

On behalf of the entire TRCP family, including your union, we extend a formal welcome to you as a pioneering member of the USA and earnestly thank you for joining us. You will not be disappointed.

    Sincerely,

    Fred Myers
    Executive Director
    The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance

“It is not what we have that will make us a great nation; it is the way in which we use it.” -Theodore Roosevelt, 1886

The TRCP Organization: The TRCP is a non-profit organization driven by a Board of Directors and a Policy Council made up of leaders from many of the country’s top hunting, fishing and conservation groups. We have a national focus on access and conservation issues affecting hunting and angling and are supported by our own nationwide network of over 90,000 sportsmen and women and more than 1,400 affiliated local and state-level clubs and organizations, that themselves represent nine million Americans.

Our Mission: The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership is a coalition of leading hunting, fishing and conservation organizations, labor unions and individual grassroots partners working together to preserve the traditions of hunting and fishing by a.) expanding access to places to hunt and fish, b.) conserving fish and wildlife and the habitats necessary to sustain them, and c.) increasing funding for conservation and management.

Partnership: Becoming an individual Partner in the TRCP costs nothing; it is open to all hunters, anglers and Americans who care about conservation and improving sportsmen’s access.  All we ask in return is that individual Partners help support our efforts by getting involved and becoming a voice for access and conservation. The TRCP includes both affiliated sportsmen who belong to a wide range of fish and wildlife conservation organizations and the many “unaffiliated” hunters and anglers who have previously lacked a collective voice. It is also free to partner with the TRCP as an affiliate group. This opportunity is available to organizations and businesses that believe in TRCP’s mission and wish to support it.

The TRCP Approach: Presently, numerous first-rate organizations are working to protect our hunting and fishing heritage and fish and wildlife habitat. The TRCP is simply a proactive means for these groups to work in coordinated partnership to amplify and strengthen the voices of the conservation community.

TRCP partner organizations represented on the Board of Directors and Policy Council identify consensus conservation and sportsmen’s priorities and establish plans for carrying out policy initiatives to achieve the community’s goals. The TRCP staff offers services to support these efforts providing grassroots organizing, policy analysis, communications assistance, financial development and other services designed to help educate policymakers and encourage America’s hunters and anglers to stand up and be heard on issues they care about.

    USA Sponsorship FAQ

What is the difference between a corporate sponsor and a corporate partner?
A corporate sponsor is a business that offers U.S.A. made items at a discounted price for Union Sportsmen’s Alliance members. A corporate partner is a business that offers U.S.A. made items at a discounted price, plus additional Union Sportsmen’s Alliance support. This additional support may be through giving the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance items to give away at conventions, monetary compensation, purchasing television advertising on our shows, and anything that goes above and beyond just a discount on a business’s U.S.A. items. We appreciate, and need, many types of sponsors and partners.

What type of business do you need to own to become a corporate sponsor or partner with the USA?
The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance requires all business sponsors/partners to offer items related to the outdoors that are made in the U.S.A.

What if some of my items are made in the U.S.A. and others are not?
The only items the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance can promote are U.S.A. made items. If you have other products that are not made in the U.S.A., we can still promote your business - just NOT the items made outside of the U.S.A.

If I have a business that is related to the outdoors, how would I go about becoming a corporate partner or a corporate sponsor?
If you are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor or partner with the USA, simply contact Julia Allen at . Please remember that the business must be related to the outdoors, and the products must be made in the U.S.A.

Some of your partners are Union Sportsmen’s Alliance outfitter businesses, how do I become involved with that?
The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance is always happy to assist our members in promoting their own side business. If you own a outdoor related side business, all that the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance requires is that you are a Union Sportsmen’s Alliance member and that you offer an exclusive discount for other Union Sportsmen’s Alliance members. Please contact Julia Allen at for more information.

I would like to purchase some items from the Deals and Discounts, how do I do that?
In order to purchase items from the Deals and Discounts section, you must be logged into the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance website. If you are not logged in, or registered to be able to login to the website, you will not be able to see the discount codes in the Deals and Discounts section.

Why should I register for the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance website?
In order to gain access to USA member-only Deals and Discounts, to post on the discussion forums, and to gain other USA-member perks in the future, you must be registered with the website. Your registration information is never sold, and we respect your privacy.

How do I login to the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance website?
Once you become a member - make sure you have your member ID on hand (this was sent to you via email or post), visit the USA website homepage and, on the right hand side of the page, you will see the log-in. Once you receive your confirmation email with your username and password, simply log-in via www.unionsportsmen.org.

If I joined online to become a USA member, am I automatically registered for the website?
Yes. Your confirmation e-mail and your welcome letter will include your username and password. You can change your password after you log on, and if you do, you will no longer be able to use the password above. Please wait at least one hour after joining before attempting to log on.

The USA's Mission and Policy Statements

    USA Mission Statement

The mission of the USA is to recruit and  actively engage union sportsmen and women in TRCP's ongoing fight to create a better future for hunting and fishing while bringing together an existing union community of sportsmen and women and extending their benefits of being a union  member beyond the workplace, into the woods and water.

USA Political & Legislative Policy Statement

As a program of the TRCP, USA is non-partisan and does not take positions on political, legislative or policy issues.  Nor does the USA endorse or support any candidates or political parties. All legislative, policy or grassroots activities are confined to the TRCP’s conservation agenda. TRCP strongly supports the 2nd amendment, but focuses exclusively on conservation and access issues. The above statement does not apply, in any way, to how USA’s participating unions communicate with their members on political, legislative or policy issues.
